much a werewolf as, as . . . as Abner Mabuto's old white-haired father."
Cyrus turned around and exchanged amused looks with Paula.
Kyna pounded her fist on the card table. "Don't you dare make fun of me!"
He took Kyna's face in his hands and looked deeply into her eyes for a moment, then leaned forward and brushed his lips across her mouth, softly, the way a butterfly might land on a flower. When he pulled back she seemed to relax a little.
"Why did you do that?" she whispered.
"It might be the last time you ever let me kiss you and I wanted to remember how you taste."
Cyrus straightened up and walked around to the other side of the table. He looked at Paula and shrugged.
"You sure you want to be here?" he asked the witch.
Paula laughed. "I wouldn't miss this for the world."

"Is she going to be all right?" Cyrus asked.
Kyna was lying on the floor with her head resting in his lap.
"Yeah," Paula replied. "She'll be fine. Get up from there now and go on."
"Okay." Cyrus eased Kyna's head down on a folded towel and hurried out of the room.
Paula looked down at the other woman's face. Just standing so close to Kyna made Paula's head spin. She was tempted to search her, hoping to find whatever it was that was causing the disturbance, but that would be a breach of Cyrus's trust, and in spite of herself, Paula liked the man.
Kyna opened her eyes. When she could speak, she asked, "What happened?"
"You fainted," Paula replied.
Kyna sat up and looked around the room. "Where's Russ?"
"He's outside. He told me to come get him if you still wanted to see him."
